Direct afternoon sun NO PROBLEM!

As photographers we need to learn to master ANY lighting circumstance. Here is an example of direct sunlight in the afternoon (3:25pm). I put the model with the sun hitting her at the angle I wanted, then put a diffusion screen to soften the light LOTS between her and the sun. I made sure I had a background that was in the shade to keep her brighter than my background. Next I added a reflector for some more punch in the highlight + one to back lighting her thus creating more depth and dimension. The background being in shade also gives it a colder color temperature (bluer) which creates the feeling of more distance. The picture is photographed at 180mm. f4.6 This is one more sample from my Photographing People Part 1 class (all levels).

Excellent tip and information about how to take advantage of light during this hard time in the day. Now anyone who reads this article don't have any excuses to not shoot with hard light. The only excuses can be lack of assistants or reflectors :)
Thank you for the kind words Roger, yes every time better be a good time to photograph. We can't always choose the circumstances.
That is a great tip. I work alone on wedding photography shoots and model shoots for that matter so strong light can be a real pain.
Now that I have a large pop up diffuser I will have to insist on help from groomsmen or bridesmaids in future ;-)
Another option we covered on wedding course in Spain with Martin Graham-Dunn is for the subjects to wear sun glasses and get the catch light in the glasses. Of course this would not really be appropriate on ones wedding day :-)
